Packback has been a valuable tool for my students and for me as an instructor. It has been useful in encouraging writing among students who rarely write. The AI assistance has been wonderful, providing students with guidance through the writing process when I can't be there to help. The deep dives feature allows students to understand the scope of their assignment fully and the discussion board fosters meaningful conversations with support. I am more likely to use the discussions in my online classes, but I like the writing AI and deep dives even in my in person classes. Packback's staff also stands out. They are real people who take the time to read technical concerns and respond promptly and thoughtfully. It is refreshing to have technical assistance that doesn't treat the user like an idiot! I recommend Packback to educators who are looking for writing and deeper learning support for their classes.

As a student, this service is just a stressful chore every week. It is set up so students ask and answer each other's questions, but a large number of them don't actually understand that they are asking the class a question and instead answer their own question in their post instead of elaborating on what they are asking. Because we are answering each other's questions, you don't actually know what's on the test because the professor didn't ask any questions. Regular old discussion boards with professor curated questions are far superior (and cheaper) from a student's standpoint; they actually give you an idea of what the professor expects you to know. Not to mention the fact that your performance is judged entirely by AI.

You can argue that it helps students learn to write better, but writing classes already exist for this purpose (and are a requirement). I'm taking this class to learn business law, not to learn how to write a paper, genius. Let me write judgement free.

I enjoyed this platform for our class discussion posts because it was straight-forward, easy to use and actually encourages thoughtful and insightful discussions. Our class communications, as a result of using this platform, were more engaging and less of a simplistic back and forth interaction. The ability to predict your grade before posting was also great because you don't have to worry about the quality of your post after you've already submitted it. The system will tell you what's missing and what's required to improve your score.

I'm going to go out on a limb that Packback reviews are kinda like online teaching evaluations. The few that truly love you will write one, those that for some reason despised you (usually because you were tough but fair) are the majority. I can't tell you how many students have come back way later and said to me 'Packback made think and extended the course beyond lecture'. Thats the whole reason I've been using it for years.

But, they never say until long after the fact. That's why I think teaching evals shouldn't be given until after the courses they take that my courses are prerequisites for are finished (usually after admission to health professional programs. Its also why I seldom pay attention to the evals right after the class ends. I couldn't tell you how many times I've heard 'man, you were tough, I didn't like you much then, but I passed my board exams because you were tough; thanks.

Packback will continue to be a strong part of my class. My colleagues are slowing coming around and jumping on board and I have a textbook arriving next year and the plan is to bundle packback with my text. Love it, and I've tried a number of others, none of whom survived.

Packback questions is a great platform for students to engage with their peers as well as demonstrate mastery of the subject. There is some level of peer mentoring when the top students in the class post questions that contain relevant and timely references. Others who did not do this the first time see the higher scores and increased responses and then begin adding a reference (and improving their own curiosity scores).

I also find that PB is mentioned in many students' course evaluations as one of the things they enjoyed most about the class.

Packback is guilty of relentless spam advertising to my faculty email address, and I'm finally fed up with this abuse of my attention.

Also, you can pretty much guarantee that when a service is advertised by spam, the product itself is a steaming log and the developers are getting desperate. It appears the rule holds true here: Packback is YET ANOTHER silly AI student writing assistant in a hype-driven ecosystem already bloated with such things. Though I've never tried it and will not be doing so, its performance appears to be inferior or on par with a number of FREE AI student tools, and assuredly inferior to the top-rated paid subscription services that are helpful to some students. This one is vastly more expensive, however, and their business model is evidently to spam faculty and get them to use it and obligate all their students to buy it at a ridiculous price as a captive audience.

I, for one, will not be embracing the suck.
